Free Travel Map Apps and Alternatives to Google Maps App
My favourite free travel map app at the moment that helps me navigate new cities is called CityMaps2Go
Free Travel Map App
Download the map of the city you are going beforehand and then you can see where you are on the map using GPS without needing Wi-Fi or a data connection.
The search function also works offline so you can find, restaurants, landmarks and shops while out and about. Then get directions to the place, or just look for what is nearby.
You can easily pin places on the map, such as where you are staying or points of interest with this travel map app.
The places of interest also include ratings and reviews. Hence, find useful info and new things to do in your own city!
While not every restaurant or hotel is listed on the app, it also helps me to see how popular or well-known a restaurant is.
Maps.me is another app which is similar, this downloads the map of a whole region or city. It seems like I use this app almost every day because I am on the road a lot travelling. I have used this in the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and even on small islands like Penang and Langkawi it still worked fine.
Since this app isn’t limited to cities, it is better for driving / using in taxi’s to see where you are going. Read my article on Taxi advice abroad for travellers to learn more taxi tips.
The app can sometimes take a minute to find where you are on the map, especially in remote places. I turn it on and let it run in the background a minute so it gets a head start.
CityMapper.com This ultimate transport app helps you get from A to B within a city and shows you all transport options and estimated time of arrival (ETA). Citymapper is especially handy and I use this app in London to find buses, tube’s and trains. It also shows ferries, bike and Uber options. I highly recommend this since they have the most complex big cities to navigate on the app and are adding new cities all the time.
